EYE OF THE BEHOLDER

Wounded and hurting, she turned away from the pack
To wallow in her misery and die alone
There were no foreseeable dangers in sight
Her cubs were safe
To her they must never see her dying
It is important that they feel safe
As she turned away, she saw a pack of hyenas circling
Her pain forgotten
Her reservations ignored she fought with her last breath
For her cubs.

Just as surely as the fight started
Her breath left her body
Dead!
As far as everyone could tell.
With feral displays
Predators circled preys
Ready to attack!
Ready to pounce!
Ready to plunder!

Just moments ago were they terrified
Their indomitable mother wounded
Whiles bringing them safely home
When they saw the hyenas circling
And the magnificent warrior rise to the occasion
Pretty cubs blinded by hero worship
They were safe or so they thought
She was pure magnificence in battle
As breath left her, it dawned on them
Whose progeny they were

With righteous anger did the prey turn on the predator
With shock did the predator a double take
Too late
Advantage had been lost
If he wanted a plunder,
He would have to reschedule his calendar.
